Cold front expected to improve air quality

The air quality today is expected to be moderate, an improvement from Tuesday.

Forecasters with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality predict a warning level of yellow, saying those who are unusually sensitive to air pollution could be affected by the conditions.

The improvement is due to a cold front expected to pass through the area through this morning, said Keith Lynch, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service office in Wakefield.

He said there will be a chance of rain throughout the day.

On Tuesday, the warning level was orange and people with respiratory illnesses were especially encouraged to limit or reschedule strenuous outdoor activities.

The air quality in Richmond and Northern Virginia also was downgraded from orange to yellow.

When measuring air quality, federal officials define Hampton Roads as the cities of Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Newport News, Hampton, Williamsburg, Poquoson, and the counties of James City, York, Gloucester and Isle of Wight.
