Burn Plant Taking Tulsans’ Trash for Free Sunday

Tulsans can dispose of their trash for free Sunday at the local burn plant.

Tom Simpson, president of the Walter B. Hall Resource Recovery Facility, said the event aims to educate the public about the plant and the benefits of burning trash over putting it into a landfill.

“Residents can safely dispose of waste and see firsthand how Tulsa’s trash is converted into renewable energy,” he said.

Tours of the facility at 2122 S. Yukon Ave. are available.

CIT, a New York financial company, owns the plant, although Tulsa residents and businesses have paid off the $180 million cost over the last 20 years through higher trash rates.

The city’s disposal contract with the plant ends July 1, and municipal-controlled waste is set to go to the Quarry Landfill because of contractual obligations.

The plant will have to compete for other available business to remain open.
