Natural Selection is the Designer
If Allan Mitchell (Letters, June 20) wants an explanation for particles-to-people evolution, he should consult the Bible. It says man was created directly from dust. At least with the theory of evolution, the mechanism it provides as an explanation is vastly more plausible than the unprovable supernatural god that creationism provides.
And even though he does not realise it, the scientific theory that Charles Darwin proposed does provide a designer to explain the apparent design in nature. In fact, his theory is largely centred on a designer, just not the sentient type.
Natural selection is that designer and, unlike creationism’s designer, is an observed fact, as well as not being biased toward any perception.
His assertion that Darwin had antipathy toward God is false. Though Darwin was critical of Christianity, he was open to the possibility that there is a god. He essentially described himself as agnostic and found a non-personal deistic god more appealing and logical than the personal creator god like that in Christianity.
