SAN FRANCISCO, July 4 /PRNewswire/ — Aquarium of the Bay today announced that Fin, a giant 25-foot long, hand-crafted model of a King Salmon, will make a special two-day stop in its outdoor public space as part of the Save Our Wild Salmon organization’s “Extinction Stops Here!” road show. The two-ton behemoth’s interior features a dramatic hand-painted mural and interactive exhibit on watershed ecosystems and the salmon life cycle.

Fin will be on display outside of the Aquarium of the Bay on PIER 39 at the Embarcadero and Beach Street in San Francisco from 9 am to 8 pm on Thursday and Friday, July 5 and 6, 2007.

“Aquarium of the Bay’s focus on education and conservation makes us an ideal site for showcasing Save Our Wild Salmon’s efforts to recover endangered Northwest salmon and steelhead to healthy, abundant and sustainable populations,” stated John Frawley, general manager of Aquarium of the Bay. “The traffic-stopping display provides an entertaining way for children and adults to learn about the plight of these species, and encourages public advocacy of programs that ensure they survive and thrive.”

Fewer salmon are returning each year to key western watersheds like the Klamath and Columbia-Snake river basins. Habitat destruction, poor water management and dams on the Klamath and lower Snake Rivers have caused wild salmon populations to drop dramatically. Declining runs of wild salmon have curtailed fisheries and hurt regional economies throughout the Pacific salmon states, including California.
