Corps Begins Releasing More Flood Waters Now That Rain Has Subsided

As the rains have diminished and most rivers have receded into their banks, the Fort Worth District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, has begun releasing flood waters from its lakes.

At Lewisville Dam, the floodgates were opened Sunday morning in an effort to lower the lake below the spillway crest. As the flow over the spillway decreases and the channel capacity becomes available, the floodgates will be opened further.

The floodgates at Benbrook Dam were also opened Sunday, but due to rain Sunday evening, the releases may have to be reduced later today due to the high flows at Dallas.

Similarly, the releases from Proctor Lake had to be reduced this morning due to the heavy rainfall that occurred below the dam. Four inches of rainfall over a small area was reported this morning.

At Lavon Lake, a release of approximately 1,000 cubic feet per second was started late this morning.

The flood releases from Belton, Stillhouse and Granger Lakes were halted Thursday, July 5, after the heavy rains that occurred over July 4th near Cameron. The releases from these three lakes were re-initiated Saturday. The releases from Belton were increased this morning as the Little River receded.
