Sony Announces New Plans for PlayStation and PSP

Posted on: Friday, 22 August 2008, 08:10 CDT

Sony announced details of its new handheld PlayStation Portable and the latest PlayStation 3 gaming console on Thursday at the Leipzig games conference. The PlayStation Portable will launch in October, and will include a high-resolution screen and built-in microphone to enable the device to be used as a telephone.

The company also unveiled a new version of the PlayStation 3 console. The 160GB PS3 will begin selling October 31 in Europe for 449 Euros, and in November in North America for $500 dollars. It will initially sell as a bundle that includes a limited edition of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.

In the U.S., the 160GB version will come with a voucher for the PlayStation Network game PAIN. In Europe, a voucher for 70 euros worth of downloadable content will be included instead.

The recently announced 80 GB version is currently shipping and sells for $400.

"Consumers are utilizing PS3 as an entertainment hub for their digital media, placing content such as their entire music collection on the hard drive," Jack Tretton, who leads Sony’s American business, told BBC News.

"The 160GB PS3 system addresses this growing consumer demand."

The company also announced a wireless keypad that will interface with existing PS3 controllers to allow touch-typing.   But Sony did not announce a price for the Bluetooth-enabled keypad, which can easily convert into a touchpad-style mouse.

An upgraded version of the PlayStation Portable, called the PSP 3000, was also unveiled. Although it has the same dimensions as the PSP Slim & Lite, the new version boasts an antireflective screen, a larger color palette and a higher contrast ratio. Also included is a built-in microphone for headset-free use of the built in Skype interface, along with voice functionality in some games.

The PSP 3000 will be available worldwide October 15, and will sell as a bundle with the game Ratchet and Clank for $200 in the US and 199 euros in Europe.
