In the 1960s the nation was unified under an ambitious vision, one that would culminate with the first humans setting foot on the Moon. It was believed that it was only a matter of time until man proceeded to the Martian surface.

Yet, more than 40 years later, we have not managed to again leave low Earth orbit. But a new dream has emerged, and it is more accessible than any previous space mission.

While NASA astronauts all have military backgrounds, and familiarity with supersonic aircraft is all but a requirement, the first humans on Mars could be average civilians.

The Mars One project, a not-for-profit organization that seeks to establish a permanent human settlement on Mars in 2023, is now accepting applications. And all that is required at this stage is that the applicant be over the age of 18.

Naturally, the spots are limited, so the organization says it is looking for individuals who “have a deep sense of purpose, willingness to build and maintain healthy relationships, the capacity for self-reflection and ability to trust. They must be resilient, adaptable, curious, creative and resourceful.” Candidates are also expected to commit to a minimum of eight years extensive training.

Mars One is expected to begin the selection process soon, so for those of you willing to take the next step for mankind, now is the time to begin polishing that resume.
