Russian Space Troops to Launch Three Satellites

Moscow, 26 December: The Russian Space Troops are planning to add three satellites to the orbital group of the Russian Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS). ITAR-TASS learnt at the Russian Space Troops that "the launch of a Proton-K booster is scheduled for 1654 Moscow time [1354 gmt] from the Baykonur cosmodrome".

The heavy carrier rocket Proton-K is equipped with a DM booster unit. It will put into orbit two satellites with a three-year life span and one satellite of a new modification, GLONASS-M, with enhanced functional capabilities (life span of seven year). "Currently, GLONASS is being restored to its minimal structure of 18 satellites. The military component of the system will be restored no sooner than 2006," the agency's source said.

Currently, GLONASS is made up of 13 satellites, 11 of them are used as planned and two are in standby mode. [passage omitted]
