Japan Postpones Launch of Test Satellite to Late Oct.

Posted on: Tuesday, 19 August 2003, 06:00 CDT

Tokyo, Aug. 19 (Jiji Press)--Japan's Institute for Unmanned Space Experiment Free Flyer said Tuesday it has postponed the launch of a satellite to test inexpensive but high-quality computer parts to around late October from Oct. 8.

The SERVIS-1 satellite is due to be launched on a Rockot rocket from Russia, but preparations for the Russian rocket have fallen behind. SERVIS stands for Space Environment Reliability Verification Integrated System.

The experimental satellite is part of Japan's plan to promote the use of consumer electronics parts in satellites by verifying the reliability of such parts in a space environment, where strong radioactive rays may cause damage.

The institute is affiliated with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
