Ex-Radical Back in Custody

March 25, 2008
Repost This

LOS ANGELES — Just days after her release on parole, a former 1970s radical who hid as a fugitive for years was headed back to prison yesterday to serve at least one more year after what corrections officials called an “administrative error” resulted in her early release. Criticism that followed Sara Jane Olson’s release Monday spurred a thorough review of her sentence and the timing of her parole, Chief Deputy Secretary Scott Kernan said at a news conference. Officials discovered a 2004 miscalculation that resulted in the former Symbionese Liberation Army member being released a year too early, he said. Olson, who was formerly known as Kathleen Soliah, was charged in 1975 with attempting to bomb police cars with the SLA, a group best known for kidnapping newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst. (AP)

Astronauts on space walk

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Endeavour’s astronauts embarked on the fifth and final space walk of their mission yesterday, this time attaching a 50-foot inspection pole to the international space station for use by the next shuttle visitors. Michael Foreman and Robert Behnken floated out the hatch late in the afternoon as the linked shuttle and station soared more than 200 miles above the Pacific. They planned to space walk the night away. The space walk was the last major space station job for Endeavour’s crew. The shuttle arrived at the orbiting complex March 12. Endeavour is scheduled to undock from the space station tomorrow night and land back at Kennedy Space Center on Wednesday night. The shuttle will have spent 12 days at the station — the longest shuttle visit ever. (AP)

Frank: Legalize marijuana

BOSTON — Rep. Barney Frank said he plans to file a bill to legalize “small amounts” of marijuana. Frank announced his plans late Friday on the HBO show Real Time, hosted by Bill Maher. “I’m going to file a bill as soon as we go back to remove all federal penalties for the possession or use of small amounts of marijuana,” Frank, a Massachusetts Democrat, told Maher. Frank didn’t define “small amounts.” Frank said he thinks “its time for the politicians in this one to catch up to the public. The notion that you lock people up for smoking marijuana is pretty silly.” He told Maher he’d call the bill the “Make Room for Serious Criminals” bill. (AP)
