Vegetarian Eaterie is a Work of the Imagination
By Philip Key
THE gloriously bohemian Egg Space cafe, in Liverpool’s city centre Newington, continues to delight with its fabulously varied vegetarian menu – but is decidedly very “meaty” when it comes to opening up its space for art exhibitions.
The latest, titled Away With the Faeries, features work by eight artists putting the focus on the ‘world of the imagination and magic’ in their own inimitable way.
The paintings are in a hugely varied style, including acrylic, watercolours, ink, mixed media, recycled materials and stuff such as glitter and buttons.
One of the organisers and curators of the fascinatingly named Head Space at Egg Space, Jazamin Sinclair, explains that this is just one of a long series of exhibitions planned for this year.
“And usually we put the artists into groups that are readily identified by the style of their work,” she added.
The eight artists in this show are: Elisabeth Bower, Jo Bywater, Lynn Fraser, Jasmine Maddock, Kate Monkman, Lauren Reis, Michelle Yoxall and Natalie.
The Egg Space is one of Liverpool’s great gourmanding experiences and has a long tradition stretching back to the early 1980s. It is one of the few such places that have managed to retain its popularity without falling foul of the brigades of brash designers keen to add sparkle, glitz and chrome.
It’s a warm, inviting and homely eatery-cum-meeting place, although it demands fitness from its customers, who have to trawl up flights of wonderfully battered stairs to the top of the building.
Artists wanting to put their work on show at Egg Space should email small jpeg photographs and contact details to the curators at: headspace@eggspace.org There is a big demand for space and a waiting list, so Jazamin asks artists to be patient.
AWAY With the Faeries opens on Friday and continues to April 27. Opening times: Monday-Saturday 9am to 10.30pm. Entry Free.
