NASA says it has awarded more than $8.5 million to U.S. colleges and universities for space-related research and technology development.

In addition, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration said its awards can be used to enable faculty development and higher education student support.

The selections are part of a NASA program designed to assist states in developing partnerships between NASA research assets, academic institutions and industry.

A total of 13 proposals were selected for funding to colleges and universities in Arkansas, Delaware, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Tennessee, Vermont and Wyoming.

NASA said the winning proposals were selected through a merit-based, peer-reviewed competition, with the average award totaling $750,000 for a three-year period.
