A Television World Without 'Star Trek'...

Posted on: Thursday, 5 May 2005, 18:00 CDT

After "Star Trek: Enterprise" passes (at 8 p.m. Friday, May 13, UPN), it will mark the end of a television era.

"Star Trek" has had a steady run on television since the 1980s. In 1987, "Star Trek: The Next Generation" had a seven-year stretch that begat "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (from 1992 to 1999) and "Star Trek: Voyager" (1995 to 2001).

"Enterprise," a prequel to the original "Star Trek" with William Shatner, launched in 2001 and has struggled in the ratings.

No new series from the franchise is planned for this fall, making it the first time in 17 years that a "Star Trek" series is not in production.

The current series stars Scott Bakula as Archer, the first captain of the starship Enterprise.

In the last episode, "Next Generation" characters Riker and Troi (Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis) use the holodeck to gain insight into a pivotal time in Archer's career.

This finale also will reveal "tragedy" for the crew. Well, yeah. They are now all out of work.
