Our Waste of Space
MURPHY reckons the nation’s boffins are breathing a sigh of relief that Minister for Science Jimmy Devins made it to the launch of their annual research funding shindig on Thursday.
Only a couple of days earlier, Dr Devins was languishing in French Guyana representing Ireland at the European Space Council. French Guyana is on the North coast of South America, which is apparently the best place for Europe to launch its rockets.
Ireland spends EUR13million a year on the European Space Agency, even though we’re in recession and the ESA has never managed to put a single astronaut into space.
For that price, we could send the entire Cabinet and junior ministers into space on Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic and still have four million left over.
