Brit Tunnel Hero
By VICTORIA WARD
A MYSTERY lorry driver saved truckers trapped in the Channel Tunnel blaze by smashing a train window with a hammer, it emerged yesterday.
The unknown Brit freed all 32 hauliers left stranded in choking smoke on the freight shuttle after a toxic load exploded.
Panic had broken out among the drivers, seven of whom were British, when the inferno erupted seven miles from Calais on the way to Folkestone on Thursday.
Belgian trucker Patrique Lejein, 50, said: "We heard two explosions and suddenly thick smoke swept through the carriage."
"The train stopped, the lights went out and there was mayhem. One of the men - I think he was English - found a hammer and we smashed a window and climb out."
