Ike Wrecks Plan for Space TV Link

September 17, 2008

PLANS for today’s live televised link-up between Glasgow and the International Space Station have been cancelled because of Hurricane Ike.

NASA Mission Control in Houston had to evacuate last Thursday as Ike bore down on the Gulf Coast of the US.

A team based at a hotel near Austin, Texas, has remained in contact with the space station, but NASA has been forced to cancel all non-essential communications.

More than 300 children, politicians, dignitaries and local space experts had been invited to the event, scheduled for Glasgow’s Old Fruitmarket.

Astronaut Michel Tognini had been due to attend, and a 20-minute live television spot had been booked allowing guests to talk to the cosmonauts.

Glasgow City Marketing Bureau organised the event in advance of the world’s biggest space show, the Inter national Astro nautical Congress, to be held at the SECC from September 29 to October 3.
