THE country's first "space academy" was launched yesterday for students aiming for a career in Solar System exploration.

It has been set up by the National Space Centre, in Leicester and will provide education programmes, summer space schools, roadshows and conferences. It will be built around science subjects in the National Curriculum.

The scheme, aimed at nine to 19-year-olds, was paid for with pounds 990,000 from the East Midlands Development Agency and involves local universities.
