Russian Expert: Nasa Asteroid Project May Help Protect Earth

MOSCOW. July 4 (Interfax) – The project in which NASA’s Deep Impact probe crashed into Comet Tempel 1 in a bid to understand the its composition and the origins of the solar system will be a first step towards protecting Earth from asteroids, space specialist Anatoly Kopik told Interfax.

“This is the first experiment in which a celestial body of this kind was affected and the first experience of solving problems of asteroid security for Earth,” he said.

“This experiment poses no danger either to Earth or the comet itself,” he said.

Meanwhile, Moscow’s Presnya Court is considering a suit from Russian astrologer Marina Bai, who demanded that the Deep Impact project be blocked. She also wants to be awarded damages for emotional trauma amounting to 8.71 billion rubles.

“NASA’s action encroaches on my system of spiritual and life values and on the natural life of space and upsets the natural balance of forces in the entire universe,” Bai said.
