Space shuttle Atlantis successfully launched from the Kennedy Space Center near Cape Canaveral on Monday in a mission to carry spare parts to the International Space Station.
NASA reported “a smooth countdown, with no technical issues and weather that steadily improved throughout the afternoon.”
Shuttle Atlantis crewmembers are scheduled to venture outside the orbiting outpost for three spacewalks over the course of the 11-day mission.
The shuttle is carrying two control moment gyroscopes, equipment and EXPRESS Logistics Carrier 1 and 2 to the ISS.
Six astronauts are on board the space shuttle; commander Charles O. Hobaugh, Barry E. Wilmore, pilot, and mission specialists Robert L. Satcher Jr., Mike Foreman, Randy Bresnik and Leland Melvin.
The mission marks the first time in space for astronauts Wilmore, Satcher and Bresnik.
The STS-129 mission is to be the final space shuttle crew rotation flight, according to NASA. Station crewmember Nicole Stott will be carried back to Earth at the end of the mission. Stott has served as flight engineer on the ISS since August.
