Moscow, 21 October: A delegation of the Kazakh Senate, headed by Senate Chairman Nurtay Abykaev has visited the Khrunichev Space Centre, the centre's press-service told the Interfax-Military News Agency on Friday [21 October].

"Main attention was paid to joint Russian-Kazakh space projects. Khrunichev Director General Aleksandr Medvedev familiarized the delegation with the development of the first Kazakh satellite, KazSat, and the Bayterek space carrier rocket," a press-service official said.

According to the press-service, Khrunichev is developing the KazSat space communications system in the interests of developing broadcasting and satellite communications in Kazakhstan. In compliance with the Russian-Kazakh intergovernmental agreement, the Khrunichev Space Centre is to establish the Bayterek rocket system, based on the Angara carrier rocket, at the [Russia-leased] Baykonur space centre jointly with other enterprises.

The first Kazakh satellite is expected to be launched into space from Baykonur in December 2005.

The official noted that the delegation had inspected the full- scale mock-up of the Mir space station and the final assembly workshop, manufacturing such main products as the Proton, Proton-M, and Rockot carrier rockets, the multi-role laboratory module, and the Briz-M and Briz-KM boosters.
