BEIJING (AP) -- China expects to launch a satellite by the end of this year for a research project with the European Space Agency, the official Xinhua News Agency reported Saturday.
China Aerospace Technology Research has completed assembly of the satellite for the Double-Start program and is testing it and its rocket, the agency said.
It said the satellite is one of two to be launched by China, joining four to be sent up by the European agency.
European space officials said earlier that the program will involve pairs of satellites flying in different orbits to measure the Earth's magnetic field.
Xinhua didn't give any details of the satellites, but the European agency said earlier that each was to weigh 270 kilograms (600 pounds).
The launches are part of growing collaboration in space between China and European governments.
Beijing signed an agreement last month to contribute to the European Galileo program to develop a satellite-based navigation system similar to the Global Position System run by the U.S. government.
