Globalization, Technology, Supply Chain Management and Quality Control of Space Programs

Posted on: Friday, 13 February 2004, 06:00 CST

NEW YORK, Feb. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Globalization and its effect on supply chain management and quality control of Europe's space programs will highlight some of the discussion at AVIATION WEEK'S Toulouse Symposium, March 10-11, 2004 at the Pierre Baudis Toulouse Congress Centre. The Toulouse Symposium is an executive-level event bringing together aeronautics and space leaders to discuss new ideas to bring about greater international cooperation and to solve existing challenges facing major programs.

Among the many sessions covering the aerospace, space and aviation industry, special emphasis will be given to the global development of space programs:

* Globalization of the Aerospace Industry -- What Works? How do the best

managers get their companies to work in a global setting. What are the

drivers that make it work and what makes it fail. Today's most

successful senior executives will tell you their secrets.

* Out Of Orbit? Ensuring Quality For The Next Generation Of

Telecommunications Satellites. The space industry has been challenged

by quality control and production problems. A look at what is being

done to resolve the problems on the next generation of spacecraft.

* Galileo: Pulling Together Europe's Ambitious Satellite Navigation

Program. The Galileo satellite navigation program is on its way to

becoming a reality, and the industry team to finance, develop and

operate the system is coming together. A look at how this program will

determine how well public authorities and private industry will

cooperate on the major infrastructure programs of the future.

* Smaller Satellites -- Size Does Not Matter. Assembling supplier teams

for the increasingly popular small satellite programs are just as

challenging as pulling together the supply chain for larger ones, but

there is even less margin for error. A case study on how one emerging

satellite concept -- the ConeXpress ORS space "tug" servicing

spacecraft -- is using the European Space Agency's Public/Private

partnership effort and is creating an international supplier team.

Space-industry speakers include:

* Serge Bertrand, Chief Operating Officer, Galileo

* Antoine Bouvier, CEO, Astrium NV

* Phil Braden, CEO, Orbital Recovery Ltd.

* Olivier Colaitis, VP Strategy and Marketing, Alcatel Space; Chairman of

Galileo Industry

"The extensive global supply chains and quality initiatives for the latest satellite and space programs in Europe demand cross-cultural teaming among hundreds of companies and thousands of people in order to succeed," said Aviation Week Executive Vice President/Publisher Kenneth E. Gazzola. "This Symposium will highlight the successes so they may replicated, and open discussions for solutions to potential problem areas. The goal is to create a forum for promoting ideas and action that will strengthen industry relationships around the world."

The 2nd Annual AVIATION WEEK-Toulouse Symposium is produced in partnership with Airbus Industrie, Alcatel Space, Astrium, and supported by the City of Toulouse, the Regional Council of Midi Pyrenees, the General Council of Haute Garonne and the Toulouse Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
