New York — Julius Schwartz, whose ideas and skills as an editor of science fiction and fantasy comics were widely credited with reviving the comics industry in the 1950s, died Sunday, Winthrop University Hospital officials said. He was 89.
When the comics slipped from their “Golden Age” after World War II, Schwartz led a revival with a new version of the character known as the Flash. It spearheaded what some called “the reinvention of an entire genre” that eventually included Marvel Comics’ “Fantastic Four” and updated versions of DC Comics’ own famed superheroes, Batman and Superman.
