Teal Mission Model 2006-2015 is Up 10.5%, to 1,450 Space Payloads (Satellites, Capsules, Probes and Piloted Vehicles)

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., April 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Teal Group today announced completion of its Worldwide Mission Model: 2006-2015 during the US Space Foundation's 22nd National Space Symposium. The study counts a total of 1,450 payloads proposed for launch to Earth orbit in the next 10 years, up 10.5% from last year's 1,297 payloads for 2005-2014.

The Model breaks out the data by proposed launch year; payload type, mass and orbit; customer; prime contractor; and launch vehicle program. It provides a framework from which to make projections about the future of space, based on current "hard" information available on a wide range of satellites, capsules, probes and piloted vehicles.

Teal's forecast for the number of satellites that will be launched around the world during 2006-2015 totals 1,200. The forecast includes many of the payloads in the Model, but also takes into account anticipated replenishment and expansion spacecraft that have not been announced or even considered.

This year's payload count marks the first time in the past five years that the Model has actually grown. The 2001 Model included 2,160 payloads for the period 2001-2010. The Models published in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005 all showed steady declines.

"The Model is a kind of gauge that we use to help us detect trends in the market," notes Caceres. "Either we are seeing a real increase in the number of space systems being proposed or we are simply getting better at finding information on programs that are out there ... It's probably a little of both."

Of the payloads contained in this year's Model, Teal classifies 44.1% of them as Civil (government non-military), 34.8% as Commercial, 15.6% as Military and 5.5% as University & Other.
