Germany Trains Two Astronauts for Mission to International Space Station

MOSCOW. June 7 (Interfax) - Germany has trained two astronauts for an extended mission to the International Space Station to begin in October 2005, Ernst Messerschmitt, head of the European Astronaut Training Center in Cologne said.
Astronaut Thomas Reiter is the first candidate for the mission because he was the first European astronaut to stay in the Russian orbital station Mir for six months, he said on Monday at the opening of an exhibition on German achievements in space exploration.
Reiter said that the station is now manned by a crew of two, who spend most of their time maintaining its systems and have very little time for research programs, so a third crew member would be helpful for conducting scientific experiments.
