Shuttle Crew Wraps Up Space Station Visit

Posted on: Saturday, 16 September 2006, 18:00 CDT

The crews of the International Space Station and the space shuttle Atlantis had their last full day of joint operations Saturday.

After some downtime in the morning followed by a joint news conference, the crews spent the rest of the day transferring cargo from Atlantis to the station, NASA reported.

The mission was the first devoted to construction at the International Space Station since the Columbia disaster in 2003.

All of the rest of the assembly missions are going to be challenging. said Atlantis commander Brent Jett. We have similar payloads flying in the future. We are off to a good start on assembly. I think we can pass along a lot of the lessons to the future crews.

The Atlantis is scheduled to undock from the space station at 8:50 a.m. EDT Sunday and to touch down early Wednesday morning at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
