Kids Say 'Keep Pluto the Ninth Planet!' in Discovery Channel Store Survey

Posted on: Monday, 18 September 2006, 15:00 CDT

SILVER SPRING, Md., Sept. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The votes are in and the kids of America have spoken -- Pluto should stay the ninth planet in our solar system. The Discovery Channel Store survey, conducted August 30 - September 6, 2006, was decisive with "Planet Pluto" proponents registering their opinion by a wide 6-to-1 margin.

The unofficial survey generated more than 15,000 votes in Discovery Channel Stores and on Discoverystore.com. More than 13,000 were cast in favor of Pluto remaining in the family of nine planets, compared to just under 2,000 who voted to give Pluto the boot.

Frank Rosales, president of Discovery Commerce, said, "Despite the change in Pluto's 'official' status, this vote proves that it is clearly a sentimental favorite of kids and adults alike."

Dr. Frank Millis, Director of the Lowell Observatory, which is home to the Discovery Channel Telescope, notes that Pluto's new status opens the door for further exploration and, perhaps, more discoveries.

"The news on Pluto is something of a new beginning," Dr. Millis said. "We are on the brink of a whole new age of exploration beyond Neptune. It was believed that area was empty. We now know it is populated by countless objects and learning more about it will be an enormous time of growth and fun in space observation."
