Tracking Station Plans Confirmed

Posted on: Tuesday, 13 July 2004, 06:00 CDT

THE European Space Agency (ESA) has confirmed in writing its intention to build a space tracking station in Southland.

The station will be designed to monitor the progress of eight unmanned spaceship missions, which are scheduled to be launched by the ESA from June next year onwards.

In a letter to the Invercargill City Council, ESA international relations administrator Jean-Charles Bigot says that because of the favourable visibility for the "acquisition of signal" and the "loss of signal" offered by all the sites around Invercargill, it had been decided to choose the city as the site for the station.

"We still have to continue our technical investigations to choose between the (Invercargill) airport site and the one in the `middle of nowhere', known as `Awarua'," Mr Bigot writes.

"We are looking forward a continued support from your government and from the city council of Invercargill to continue our discussions regarding all the technical, contractual and legal issues for this project."
