Moscow, 27 July: Russia has suggested to the USA to pool their efforts in creating a spacecraft to replace the US Shuttles. [Passage omitted: repeat of earlier report quoting deputy head of Russian Federal Space Agency Nikolay Moiseyev]
"What the Russian side has in mind is the new manned shuttle Kliper [Clipper], which is being designed at the Energiya rocket and space corporation," Federal Space Agency spokesman Vyacheslav Davidenko told ITAR-TASS today. "The US side could participate in the Clipper project, above all financially and scientifically," he said.
The hull of the new manned spacecraft has already been produced, FSA sources stressed. Kliper is to replace the world's most reliable spacecraft of the Soyuz family, which are becoming obsolete both in terms of their service life and in terms of the component base. Kliper will make it possible to take a crew of six instead of the current two to three to the International Space Station. "It is not just a shuttle, but a prospect to develop a new generation of spacecraft," the FSA sources stressed.
Apart from making flights to the ISS, Kliper will also be used for interplanetary space exploration.
