Astronomical spending for Mercury probe

Tuesday, August 10, 2004

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has sent yet another probe to a far-away place that nobody outside of NASA cares about (“NASA launches spacecraft to Mercury,” Aug. 4). A probe has been sent to Mercury to determine if craters at the poles have ever had ice in them. This mission is part of a self-described “bargain- focused” $427 million program.

I will never fully understand how the U.S. government allows this type of wasteful spending to continue. These programs must get approved while America is asleep and the NASA folks are up all night waiting for E.T. to finally phone home.
