New SC Radio Station

Timaruvians can get their groove on this summer with a new station hitting the radio waves.

The polytech radio station Totally Kiwi has been replaced by a classic rock station The Groove.

Port FM station manager Brent Birchfield said the station had had a good run but it was time for a change. He said the polytech radio station helped students become radio savvy.

“It was a brilliant opportunity for people who wanted to get into radio to learn the aspects of radio.”

He hoped to integrate polytech students into the new station next year.

The Groove would run over summer and if it proved successful, Port FM would consider making it a permanent station. Mr Birchfield said the classic rock station would be ideal for baby boomers.

The Groove would be commercial free because it was taking over the polytech frequency.

“It’s not designed to take listeners from other stations but to pull listeners in who prefer classic rock CD’s and pull them back to radio.”

Groove programme manager James Valentine believed it would appeal to a niche market.

“The Groove is the summer feel.”

Mr Birchfield said as it was commercial free, they weren’t gaining or losing anything.

“It’s just a bit of fun.”

The Groove can be found on 107.2 FM or 92.3 FM.
