Moscow, 13 September: The Ministry of Defence intends to expand the military component of the Russian-made GLONASS orbital navigation system. "The plan is to increase the number of military satellites within GLONASS to 18 by the year 2005," a source at the Space Troops told ITAR-TASS today. "We currently have 11 in operation and two in reserve," he said.
"We will launch from three to five new GLONASS-M satellites that have enhanced functionality and a service life of seven instead of three years," the source stressed, adding that the GLONASS-M is currently being tested. The new satellites "will enable system users to determine coordinates with much more precision".

The GLONASS system is also used by civilians, the Russian Space Agency reports. The satellites provide non-stop transmission of the precise coordinates for air, maritime, land and space objects.
