Behind the Scenes Account of Mars Landing Scheduled at San Diego Space Event

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Last January the people around the world were captivated by the landing of two robot geologists on Mars, Spirit and Opportunity. At the Space 2004 Conference and Exposition, Dr. Firouz Naderi, the head of the Mars Exploration Program at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and Dr. Steve Squyres, the head of the Science Team on the mission and a professor at Cornell University, will recount their experiences on this mission through a highly engaging presentation. This fascinating presentation begins at 6:00 p.m., 29 September 2004.
Continuing with the Mars theme will be a special exhibit at Education Alley, which is returning to Space 2004. A full scale model of the Mars Rover will be on display, provided by JPL, and other models of space hardware will be accessible by a number of attendees including those registered from local schools Horace Mann Middle School, Joan MacQueen MS and Murray Manor Elementary. Local students and educators will hear presentations from Dr. Bonnie Dunbar, NASA shuttle veteran; Northrop Grumman engineers representing Northrop Grumman K.I.D.S, the San Diego Aerospace Museum, NASA JPL, NASA Goddard, The National Air & Space Museum; and many more. Exhibits include student work from some of the finest Space University programs in the country including a rocket design project from San Diego State University students.
Teachers are invited to attend two free workshops held prior to the conference. Aerospace Education Programs, Projects and Activities will give educators the opportunity to participate in hands on activities designed to enhance classroom curriculum and instruction. NASA JPL Office of Education is for pre-college specialists and will offer discussions and demonstrations of how small and far apart objects in our solar system actually are.
