ASTRONAUTS HONOR DELTAS: During a meeting at the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., (DST) headquarters in Washington, D.C., NASA Mission Specialists Joan E. Higginbotham (2nd, r), a soror, and Robert Curbeam Jr. greet Dr. Louise A. Rice (r), 23rd (DST) national president, and Dr. Thelma Daley, 16th DST national president, to present the sorority with a banner that flew aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery in December. The flag depicts the Delta’s 23 national presidents. Higginbotham, who made her first flight, and Curbeam, who made his third trip, were among the seven-member crew aboard the 12-day Space Shuttle Discovery mission, which returned on Dec. 22. It marked the first time two Black astronauts were on the same flight (JET, Dec. 25, 2006).
