MOSCOW. Sept 24 (Interfax) - A Soyuz-U medium class rocket carrying a Cosmos spacecraft was launched from the Plesetsk space center at 8:50 p.m. Moscow time Friday, a source with the Russian Space Forces told Interfax on Friday.
"According to the Space Forces' test and control center, the launch of the Soyuz-U rocket proceeded according to plan," he said.
The spacecraft was scheduled to be put into orbit at 8:59 p.m. Moscow time.
The launch was conducted under control of a government commission led by Space Forces Commander Lt. Gen. Vladimir Popovkin. The team directly responsible for the launch was led by Plesetsk space center chief Lt. Gen. Anatoly Bashlakov.
The launch is aimed at increasing the number of Russian military satellites in orbit.
A Soyuz-U three-stage medium class rocket is designed by the Samara space design bureau to launch piloted spacecraft of the Soyuz- TM type, Progress cargo spacecraft, and other space devices weighing up to 7,200 kilos to orbits with an inclination of 51 degrees and an altitude of 200 kilometers.
