NASA Honors Walker for Public Services

Posted on: Thursday, 14 October 2004, 06:00 CDT

Lancaster County's former congressman, Bob Walker, recently received NASA's Distinguished Public Service Medal for his services to the nation's aviation and space goals.

The Distinguished Public Service Medal is the highest honor awarded by NASA to non-government civilians whose accomplishments have contributed substantially to the NASA mission.

"I am honored to be awarded such a high accolade by this extraordinary institution," Walker said. "My work in and around the NASA community has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, and I look forward to furthering the goal of space exploration in the years to come."

Walker, who represented Lancaster County in Congress from 1977 to 1997, now serves as chairman of the Washington D.C.-based Wexler & Walker Public Policy Associates.

Since he began serving in Congress, Walker has been active in aerospace policy making, continuing his efforts in various capacities as a presidential adviser.

He has served on the President's Commission on the Future of U.S. Aerospace Industry and the Commission on the Implementation of the U.S. Space Exploration Policy.

Walker was appointed to the Aviation and Space Engineering Board of the National Research Council and is a board member of the Aerospace Corporation, SpaceDev, and vice chairman of the Space Foundation.

In April, Walker was honored with the Public Service Award by the American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics for his consistent support for the organization's national aviation and space goals.

Walker also received the NASA Distinguished Service Medal in 1996 while serving in Congress. The Distinguished Service Medal is the highest honor that NASA confers to individuals in federal service.

Walker and his wife, Sue, maintain homes in both East Petersburg and Washington.
