Tuned to the Moon
June 18, 2007
RADIO hams will send 50th birthday greetings to Britain’s most famous telescope tomorrow – by bouncing them off the Moon.
The super-sensitive, giant Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank in Cheshire will pick up the messages as they are fired back from the lunar surface.
Astronomers will turn the 76m radio dish to face the Moon and pick up the reflected signals.
The telescope hit the headlines in 1957 when it detected signals from the first artificial satellite.
