July 7, 2007
A Russian rocket sent a new U.S. television satellite into orbit Saturday.
The Proton-M rocket lifted off without incident from the Baiknour space facility in Kazakhstan carrying the DirecTV 10 spacecraft.
DirecTV said in a statement Saturday the Boeing-built satellite would expand its offerings of high-definition television programming. Communications between the satellite and a ground station in South Africa were established shortly after DirecTV 10 entered orbit above the equator.
RIA Novosti said the launch was the 47th Proton mission since 1996.
