Garmin fenix GPS watch has been named the top backpacking GPS watch for 2013 by the Montana testers at the Heart Rate Watch Company.

"What better place to really test a GPS watch like the Garmin fenix then the Rocky Mountains of Montana", says Rusty Squire, President of the Heart Rate Watch Company. He adds, "We have the ideal proving grounds right in our backyard".

"We like the new Suunto Ambit 2 but it only has 100 way points for marking whereas the Garmin fenix has 1,000 available", says Squire. He adds, "If you have a lot of routes stored on BaseCamp, or Garmin Connect, you won't have as many limitations on navigation points and points of interest".

"From a navigation perspective the Garmin fenix is superior to Suunto Ambit 2 but the Suunto Ambit 2 has more advanced heart rate and features oriented toward endurance sports", says Squire. He adds, "For hikers, backpackers, hunters and other outdoor adventure types the Garmin fenix offers a wrist top alternative to the handheld".

The Garmin fenix performer bundle offers a heart rate monitor and spare orange watch band, great for visibility in outdoor activities like hunting.

The Garmin fenix can make use of either Garmin Connect, especially for those using the optional heart rate monitor, or Garmin BaseCamp, which is the better alternative for more purist navigation according to Squire. "We prefer the BaseCamp software for the Montana mountains", says Squire.

Most GPS watches with temperature sensors built-in, like the Suunto Ambit 2, are never accurate and tend to be about 10 degrees high. The Garmin Tempe temperature sensor is external, similar in size to a foot pod (about 1 ounce) and hooks to backpacks or shoes, meaning someplace that core heat from the human body is not an issue.

The Heart Rate Watch Company is an authorized Garmin dealer that sells the Garmin fenix and they can be reached on their national toll-free line at 866-586-7129.
