Best Swim Watch Products for 2013 by HRWC

July 26, 2013

The best swim watch products for 2013 have been named by the Heart Rate Watch Company including Polar heart rate monitors, Swimovate Poolmate HR and the Garmin swim watch.

Most swim watch products have always had the vagary of measuring either heart rate or laps and strokes, but until 2013 nothing did both, but that has changed.

SWIMOVATE POOLMATE HR

The new Swimovate Poolmate HR combines heart rate, laps, stokes and distance all into one product. "While they had some early firmware glitches that have been fixed the watch is still our favorite because it goes where no swim watch has gone before by measuring all metrics," says Rusty Squire, President of the Heart Rate Watch Company.

GARMIN SWIM WATCH

The Garmin swim watch does not do heart rate but it does process laps, strokes, distance and offers a swim efficiency index (SWOLF score). All of the data – laps, strokes and distance – can be downloaded to Garmin Connect, a free online software, and analyzed in a very graphic way. "We really like their software and consider it the best swim watch software out there," says Squire.

POLAR

Some Polar heart rate monitors will get heart rate in the water thanks to a 5 kHz transmission frequency but the Polar T31 Coded chest strap is necessary to get the most consistent transmission. "The Polar RCX5, Polar FT1, FT2 and several other models will get heart rate in the water but the key is the T31 Coded chest strap," says Squire.

"Most watches, like Timex and Garmin will not do heart rate in the water because they operate on 2.4 mHz transmission frequency," says Squire. He adds, "So for sports like swimming or water aerobics you are better off to get something from the names listed above."

Suunto has some newer GPS watches in the Suunto Ambit 2 that will do laps, stokes and distance but their firmware still needs some upgrade work to be as spot on as the other watches. "Suunto Ambit 2 is superb for outdoor sports but since swimming is a new addition it still needs some evolution," says Squire.

"If you would like to talk to a real swim watch expert just call our expert staff here at the Heart Rate Watch Company toll-free at 866-586-7129," says Squire.
