NBA: LA Lakers 109, Utah 98

Kobe Bryant scored 38 points for the Los Angeles Lakers Sunday in a 109-98 win over Utah and a 1-0 edge in their Western Conference semifinal series.

Pau Gasol finished with 18 points, Lamar Odom 16 and reserve Sasha Vujacic 15 for the top-seeded Lakers.

Eight of Gasol's points came in the final two minutes of the contest.

The Jazz missed nine straight field goal attempts in the last five minutes.

Mehmet Okur had 21 points and 19 rebounds and Carlos Boozer 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Jazz.

Utah had just 37.9 per cent field goal accuracy and made only four of 19 three-point attempts.

Game 2 will be Wednesday in Los Angeles.
