Schilling to Have Season-Ending Surgery

Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling apparently won't pitch at all this season, telling a Boston radio station that he will undergo surgery on Monday for his ailing right shoulder.
Schilling has been on the disabled list all season because of a shoulder problem and the surgery could signal the end of the right-hander's career.
"There's a pretty decent chance that I've thrown my last pitch, forever," Schilling told WEEI-AM in Boston. "I'm going in to make it not hurt anymore, which is pretty much all I care about."
Schilling signed an $8 million deal with the Red Sox last November, then began experiencing pain in the shoulder and biceps over the winter. There was discussion between the pitcher and the team over the course of action -- Schilling wanting to have surgery and the team opting for rehabilitation.
Rehab was eventually decided and Schilling had apparently been making slow progress until a bullpen session last week.
Schilling has not ruled out a return in 2009, but is uncertain.
"I don't want it to end this way, but if this is the way it has to end, I'm OK with that," Schilling told the radio station.
The 41-year-old veteran was 9-8 with a 3.87 earned run average in 24 starts for the World Series champion Red Sox last season. He was also 3-0 with a 3.00 ERA in four postseason games.
Schilling helped the Red Sox to a pair of World Series titles, the first coming after his first season with the club in 2004. He also won a World Series with Arizona in 2001, earning co-MVP honors with Randy Johnson, and has a career postseason record of 11-2.
During his career, Schilling has posted a 216-146 regular-season mark with a 3.46 ERA, having also pitched for Baltimore, Houston, Philadelphia and Arizona. The six-time All-Star missed 1 1/2 months last season due to tendinitis in his shoulder.
