The Oakland Raiders have fired second-year coach Lane Kiffin.
The team, in an announcement on its Web site regarding a news conference, said simply, "Lane Kiffin has been released as head coach of The Oakland Raiders for cause."
Kiffin, 33, was removed as coach after 20 games. The Raiders were 4-12 last year and are 1-3 this season.
By making the coaching change "for cause," the Raiders may not have to pay Kiffin the remainder of his contact, estimated at $2 million a year, which was to expire after this season.
The Oakland Tribune said Raiders offensive line coach Tom Cable, 44, appeared to have the inside track on becoming the team's head coach. He was the offensive line coach for one season at Atlanta before moving to the Raiders as part of Kiffin's staff.
Kiffin was a controversial hire by Raiders owner Al Davis. Kiffin had never been a head coach and was most recently the offensive coordinator of the University of Southern California. Just 31 at the time of his hiring, Kiffin was the youngest man made an NFL head coach.
