'Cains coach frees driver from wrecked car

Posted on: Sunday, 7 December 2008, 12:19 CST

Florida police say University of Miami assistant football coach Stephen Field rescued a motorist after the young man's car drove into a ditch and hit a tree.

The Miami Herald reported Sunday that Field, who coaches the Hurricanes' defensive safeties, used a hammer to smash the windshield of the smoking vehicle, pulled the driver out and carried him to safety with the assistance of another witness.

''The car was smoking in the front,'' said Field. "You could smell the gas.''

Field added that the overturned car was in a dicey position and that there was a risk it would slide down on top of them.

Police said the accident occurred Saturday afternoon on Interstate 95. The victim's name, whose name was not available, was taken to Miami's Jackson Memorial Hospital.
