Illinois football player hospitalized
Illinois linebacker Martez Wilson was in stable condition at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana following an undisclosed incident.
Sports information director Kent Brown did not give details about Wilson’s injury, but Champaign police were investigating a stabbing at a campus bar early Friday morning.
Like Brown, police refused to say if Wilson was the victim.
Lt. Joe Gallo, a police spokesman, said officers were sent to a report of a fight in progress at a campus bar, but when they arrived, people had already had begun to disperse and no suspects were found at the scene.
About 40 minutes later, the officers were sent to a local hospital regarding a stabbing victim.
Gallo said an investigation showed there was an argument between a group of men, and a man was stabbed while trying to help another.
Wilson, a 6-foot-4 inch, 246-pound sophomore from Chicago, was the Illini’s third-ranked tackler this season, but missed the final season game against Northwestern for violation of team rules.
