Report: Ball State’s Hoke to San Diego St.

Ball State football Coach Brady Hoke reportedly will be named the next head coach at San Diego State University, perhaps this week.

Hoke agreed to an enhanced contract with Ball State this year, raising his salary to $240,000 per year including additional incentives. But The (Muncie, Ind.) Star Press reported Monday he turned down an offer close to $350,000 from the school.

Hoke was under contract through the 2010 season, but the enhanced deal included a buyout clause that apparently has been invoked. Hoke led the Cardinals to a 12-1 season in 2008, culminating with a bid to the GMAC Bowl against Tulsa.

San Diego State started its search for a new coach after firing Chuck Long one day after finishing up a 2-10 season.

The Aztecs have been unwilling to comment publicly on the matter, saying they would reserve comment until a press conference regarding the matter was scheduled.
