Kotsay, Red Sox said near agreement
January 9, 2009
Infielder Mark Kotsay and the Boston Red Sox have agreed in principle on a one-year contract, The Boston Herald reported Friday.
The newspaper said the deal is worth $1.5 million plus incentives, and will be sealed once Kotsay passes a physical.
The Red Sox acquired Kotsay last August. He hit .226 with 12 RBI in 22 games for the rest of the season, becoming the team’s regular first baseman. Third baseman Mike Lowell went out with a hip injury and the team was forced to move first baseman Kevin Youkilis back to third.
Kotsay, 33, missed much of 2007 playing for Oakland after back surgery. He has a career .281 batting average with the Florida Marlins, San Diego Padres, Oakland Athletics, Atlanta Braves and Red Sox.
