The Boston Red Sox bolstered their pitching staff Friday by signing free agent veteran Brad Penny to a one-year contract.

Penny brings a lifetime 94-75 record and a 4.06 ERA to Boston on the heels of the Red Sox AL Eastern Division rival New York Yankees’ signings of high-profile hurlers CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett.

Penny, 30, is coming off a disappointing 6-9 season with the Los Angeles Dodgers in which shoulder problems relegated him to the injured reserve list three times.

The deal reunites Penny with fellow pitcher Josh Beckett and third baseman Mike Lowell. The three were part of the 2003 Florida Marlins team that beat the Yankees in the World Series.

Terms of the contract were not revealed.
