Bill Bayno, who fell ill just months after being hired, has resigned as Loyola Marymount men’s basketball coach and the school said Monday it hired Max Good.

Good, who has a 1-16 record as the team’s acting coach since Nov. 24 when Bayno took a leave of absence to deal with his undisclosed medical condition, was given a multiyear contract.

Due to medical reasons and on the advice of my doctors, I am resigning from my duties as head men’s basketball coach at Loyola Marymount, said Bayno. I sincerely apologize for any disappointment this might cause the fans, the administration, the students and most importantly my players, their families and my coaching staff.

Bayno was hired in April after a stint in the NBA as an assistant with Portland. Previously he had been head coach at UNLV from 1995 to 2000, compiling a 95-65 record before being fired for alleged recruiting violations.

Good spent eight seasons at Bryant College, one at UNLV and five with Eastern Kentucky University, compiling a 229-225 record.
