Omaha, Nebraska to host 2008 U.S. Olympic trials

RALEIGH, N.C. (Reuters) - Temporary pools in an indoorarena in Omaha, Nebraska will be the venue for the 2008 U.S.Olympic trials, USA Swimming said on Tuesday.

The American team for the Beijing Olympics will be selectedduring the June 30-July 7, 2008 competition.

"Some might raise their eyebrows at the awarding of ourmost important event of the Olympic quadrennial to Omaha, butwe are confident this is going to be an extraordinarypartnership that will serve the best interests of our athletes,their coaches and our sport," USA Swimming executive directorChuck Wielgus said in a statement.

Two temporary 50-meter pools will be installed in theindoor arena, which will have a seating capacity of 14,000 forthe trials.

Omaha, a midwestern city of 800,000, won the trials overbids from St. Paul, Minnesota, and San Antonio, Texas.
